Insurance Agents or Insurance Online?

“It’s so easy a caveman can do it”
Have you found yourself gravitating towards shopping for auto insurance online? Many people have ditched the traditional local insurance agent and have decided to take more control of their insurance policies and use an online carrier.  In the same manner, many people prefer the ability to receive advice face-to-face with an insurance professional.  Does it matter? Well the question is best answered by the individuals personal needs.  There are advantages and disadvantages to both sides of the coin. Let’s preview a few.

Insurance Agents

Advantages:

  • Location, Location, Location – It’s nice to have an office close by to do business, ask questions, pay bills, get new auto insurance cards, declarations, etc.
  • Professional Advice – Chances are you do not think about insurance everyday.  It’s nice to have someone who does.
  • Service: Local agents provide a more one-on-one experience and the service you receive is more personal and can far exceed that of a auto insurance website or 800 number operator.

Disadvantages:

  • Although many insurance companies now have interactive websites, you may still not be able to have full control over policies compared to a online only insurance company.
  • Access 24/7 may be a problem if you are not internet savvy and you need immediate assistance such as insurance quotes, cards, file a claim, and/or declarations.
  • If the agent is captive (only offers insurance quotes from one company umbrella) then your premium options can be limited.

Online Agents / Companies

Advantages:

  • Easy access 24/7 to shop and compare insurance out of the comfort of your couch.
  • Control over coverage options and the ability to adjust coverages to figure out what insurance plan is best for you.
  • Cut down on paperwork with electronic files.

Disadvantages:

  • Some online companies only offer auto insurance and this can be a problem for someone wanting to keep their insurance all-together.
  • Your professional advice is limited unless you prefer to read and study yourself.
  • The service received is not personal being if you have a question you talk to a different person each time.

So no matter what method you prefer there are advantages.  Online companies are now starting to offer expanded coverages such as home and life.  Insurance agent driven companies are now adjusting to the internet boom and allowing insureds to purchase coverage online.  In the end, it comes down to personal preference.
